Heucheras comprise a diverse number of highly hybridized cultivars of striking foliage plants. Heucheras all sport tiny white, pink, or red bellflowers that float on dainty stalks above the basal foliage. However, Heucheras are primarily grown in the garden for their foliage, which varies from inky black to bright yellow, solid to highly veined. Heucheras are easy to grow, are fairly tolerant of moisture if they don’t dry out too long. Heucheras are shallow-rooted, and are prone to frost-heaving over the winter. The main cause of plant loss is the heaving of the root ball completely out of the soil over the winter and early spring months. Heucheras do spread slowly, and also prolifically self-seed, but do not always come true to seed, and will avidly hybridize in your garden if you have more than one variety. (We’ve created some of our own mongrel Heucheras this way.)

‘Circus’ is a small showy Heuchera featuring bright yellow leaves with dark purple veining. Flowers are pink. We’ve not had great luck with winter hardiness of yellow-leafed Heuchera, but this was has survived several seasons and although it has not grown quickly it is quite the accent plant in the front of the garden.
