Hakonechloa macra is a spectacular grass-like foliage plant that tolerates significant shade. It forms a mound of bright yellow arching grassy leaves that is sure to make an accent statement in any shade garden laden with greens and blues. The cultivar “All Gold’ is a solid bright yellow-gold leaves. ‘Aureola’ has creamy-yellow and green striped foliage. ‘All Gold’ will spread over time to form large, arching, mounding clumps. ‘Aureola’ is less vigorous, and spreads more slowly. Hakonechloa is easy to divide to make new plants for yourself or friends. Both make excellent contrasting accent plants with Hostas, ferns, and Astilbes. Leaves may bleach if they get too much sun. Despite the hardiness zone 5 rating, we have never had any issues with dieback over many seasons. Deer won’t eat our Hakonechloa.
