Filipendula ulmaria ‘Aurea’ sports bright yellow foliage with deeply cut, multi-lobed leaves. Panicles of Astilbe-like creamy-white flowers emerge on steps above the basal foliage in July. The foliage steals the show for this Filipendula. Like Filipendula rubra, this is a vigorous spreader via dense rhizomatous roots. It is easily controlled, but will fill available space. This of course means you can give some away each year to friends! The attractive foliage tends to get a bit ratty and spotted late in the season, spoiling its charm a bit in late summer, especially if the soil dries out a bit. Deer have not developed a taste for this Filipendula in our garden.
