Filipendula rubra is a vigorous, spreading plant that features attractive foliage with deeply cut, multi-lobed leaves. In July-August, large panicles of Astilbe-like pink flowers are held above the basal foliage on long stems. Filipendula spreads quickly via shallow rhizomatous roots to fill any available space. If you have a little Filipendula, you will soon have a lot! It is a great accent plant to plant toward the back of the garden bed. Although the stems are somewhat spindly, masses of Filipendula don’t require staking. We control the boundaries of our Filipendula rubra with steel edging driven into the bed. Deer will browse new growth of Filipendula if precautions are not taken, delaying or eliminating blossoming.

We removed our stand in 2023, as it was getting shaded out by trees.
