Calamagrostis is a tall ornamental grass with sturdy, flat green leaves suitable for the back of the border in a sunny garden location. It will tolerate some light shade, especially in the afternoon. In July-August, tall, fetching, feathery flower stems appear above the leaves. This is a relatively new plant in our garden, and we will decide if it is rating-worthy over the next few years. We are reluctant to plant many ornamental grasses in our garden, as many can become thugs, spreading rampantly and leaving tough, thick roots in their wake.
