'Cherries Jubilee' is a hybrid version of the species Baptisia australis which sports striking maroon and yellow lupine-like flowers on sturdy stalks with oval leaves. Baptisia forms large, dense clumps that should not require staking if grown in full sun. In our garden, the species Baptisia tended to flop a bit as we do not have many truly sunny locations. However, this cultivar is so striking we are willing to give it another try in our sunniest spot. While Baptisia is supposedly not a favorite of deer, we know from experience that woodchucks will mow them down in early spring if not protected with a wire ring.
